Fleur Wickes

Fleur Wickes is an award winning Wellington based photographer who works primarily in the genre of portraiture. Wickes is an experienced tutor having previously run numerous short and long-term photographic workshops.

"I began making portraits twenty years ago. The photographs I made then were direct, clear, sharply focussed. These days I’ve learnt life is not so simple. As a result my work is darker: pixelated; randomly focussed; rough around the edges. I no longer make the kind of work a portrait photographer is ‘supposed’ to make-- I just try to make photographs which communicate how a person feels to me." In her work Wickes strives to capture beauty and authenticity.

Her work draws on a number of processes and techniques using tools such as her iPhone to capture a non-manufactured, immediate image. This intuitive response to subject matter is followed by hours of digital manipulation often layering images with hand drawn text.
