Michael Shepherd Bio

Michael Shepherd is a high profile artist with an extensive teaching and exhibition background. Shortly after graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Hons) from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, he was awarded a QEII Arts Council Grant to travel to study 17th Century Dutch painting, materials and techniques in Amsterdam. Michael is an exquisite painter, drawing on unique moments in New Zealand’s history he creates finely rendered works. Recent paintings on panel are a response to the increasing mechanisation of modern agriculture. He has exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand, and his work is held in major national collections and in private collections in New Zealand and internationally.

"Using techniques mastered by artists in the 17th century, and often working from photographs and historical documents, Shepherd's work is an oblique kind of history painting, which acknowledges the inevitable failure of any attempt to definitively record the past”
